Leigh Wood vs Mauricio Lara Fight Prediction Preview Tips Odds

Boxing fans all around the world are waiting in anticipation for this massive blockbuster fight was we watch Leigh Wood vs Mauricio Lara in his hometown Nottingham Arena which is scheduled to take place on Saturday 18th February 2023. Leigh Wood gained many headlines last year after his fight of the year contender with the Irish fighter Mick Conlan where pulled out a devastating KO victory in the final round to successfully defend his WBA (regular) featherweight championship. The victory was more impressive due to the fact Wood was trailing in the fight as Conlan dominated most rounds but shown excellent resilence to land a massive knock-out on his first title defence.

Leigh Wood was then scheduled to fight WBA ‘super’ champion Leo Santa Cruz in a mandatory title defence. There were some disagreements with the share split and Matchroom Boxing and TGB promotions couldn’t come to an agreement. Wood later moved on to agreeing a fight with Mauricio Lara for the 24th September 2022 but Wood had to unfortunately withdraw from the fight just ten days before they were supposed to fight because of a torn bicep that he suffered doing sparring.

The WBA then requested that Leigh Wood and former WBA featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz enter into negotiations again for a title consolidation bout. It was announced that on the 12th December that Leo Santa Cruz vacated his title which left Leigh Wood as the sole featherweight champion.

Due to his bout falling through with Leo Santa Cruz, Leigh Wood vs Mauricio Laura was once again booked with fans looking forward to finally seeing these two featherweights fight at the Nottingham Arena. Boxing pundits and fans have been currently split in half as they are unsure who will be crowned WBA featherweight champion come the end of the night. It is important for Leigh Wood to be on his best on the day as he doesn’t want to go fully toe-to-toe with this hard hitting Mexican fighter.

Maurico Lara won’t mind coming into this bout as the underdog as he proved against Josh Warrington that he is only there to fight. He shocked the boxing world when he beat Josh Warrington in his own backgarden. Maurico Lara came into the bout as 11/1 underdog compared to Warrington where you’d of had to stake £33 just to win £1. This led to the Ring Magazine describing it as one of the biggest fight upsets in the year. Both fighters are highly capable of upsetting the odds and getting unexpected victories which makes the fight ten times more exciting!

Fans will still be hoping that we get another Maurico Lara vs Josh Warrington in the future due to their rematch ending up in a technical draw due to Lara having a cut on his head during the fight but for now we are patiently waiting to watch this featherweight world champion fight Leigh Wood vs Maurico Lara.

Leigh Wood vs Mauricio Lara Prediction

Leigh Wood will step into this bout with a record of 26 wins and 2 losses with no draws whereas Mauricio Lara has a record of 25 wins and 2 losses with one draw coming against Josh Warrington. 18 of Mauricio Lara wins have came through knockout to the stats suggest that Lara carries more power as he currently has a 72% knockout percentage compared to Leigh Wood who only has a 62%.

Leigh Wood is the more experienced fighter and is ten years older then Mauricio Lara. Both fighters currently fight with an orthodox stance and both fighters have won 4 out of their last 5 fights. Mauricio Lara will be wanting to use his youth to his advantage as it has been a long time since Wood was last in the ring and could suffer from ring rust on the day which he would of been working on in training but as we know sparring and fighting are two different things.

One stat that should please Leigh Wood is that he has stopped 4 out of his last 5 opponents with two huge late KO’s which shows that he can keep going till the final bell as he shown against Mick Conlan. Mauricio Lara is currently the more active fighter out of the two as he recently fought nearly three months ago compared to Wood who’s last bout was 10 months ago.
